Let me take you along the Path of the Gods, or “Sentiero degli Dei,” one of the Amalfi Coast’s most breathtaking hiking experiences.
The trail begins in the mountain village of Bomerano (Agerola), starting at about 650 meters above sea level. As you set out, you’ll immediately understand why ancient legends say the gods walked this path to rescue Ulysses from the Sirens. The panoramic views of the coastline, with Capri rising from the sea in the distance, are simply divine.
The main trail stretches for about 6.5 kilometers, winding along the mountainside through Mediterranean vegetation. You’ll walk among wild herbs like rosemary and thyme, ancient caves once used by shepherds, and terraced lemon groves clinging to the cliffs. The limestone cliffs above and the deep blue Mediterranean below create a stunning contrast throughout your journey.
About halfway through, you’ll reach the most spectacular viewpoints overlooking Positano. Here, the multicolored houses appear to cascade down the cliffside toward the sea. The trail offers perfect photo opportunities with views stretching from the Li Galli islands to the Sorrento Peninsula.
The path eventually descends to Nocelle, a tiny village above Positano. From here, you can either take the 1,500 steps down to Positano or continue to Montepertuso, known for its distinctive natural rock arch.
Some practical details:
– Duration: 3-4 hours one way
– Difficulty: Moderate
– Best time: Spring (April-May) or Fall (September-October)
– Essential items: Water, sturdy shoes, sun protection, camera
– Morning starts are recommended for better lighting and cooler temperatures
The trail can be walked in either direction, but starting from Bomerano is generally easier as it’s mostly downhill. The views of Positano and the coastline are also in front of you throughout most of the walk.
Remember that while this is one of the most beautiful hikes in Italy, it’s also a serious mountain trail. The path is well-marked but requires good walking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness. The reward, however, is some of the most spectacular coastal views you’ll find anywhere in the world.
