Naples Highlights – Walking tour

EXPLORE
Naples is a treasure trove of architecture, culture and cuisine!
A walk through the historic centre is a must-do, as is a visit to the historic sites like the Greek Theatre and the Roman Amphitheatre.
There’s also a number of fascinating museums to explore, like the National Archeological Museum and the National Museum of Magna Graecia.
When it comes to food, there is no shortage of amazing dishes to try – classic Neapolitan pizza, creamy pastas and fresh seafood are all on offer.

Let me take you through a fascinating walking tour of Naples’ historic heart. Starting at the majestic Piazza del Plebiscito, you’ll be surrounded by the city’s most prestigious landmarks – the Royal Palace with its stunning facade, and the world-famous San Carlo Opera House, Italy’s oldest opera house. The elegant Galleria Umberto I nearby showcases beautiful 19th-century architecture with its glass dome and cross-shaped layout.

As you stroll down Via Toledo, Naples’ main shopping artery, you’ll experience the city’s vibrant pulse. Historic cafes serve the best espresso in town, while local shops offer everything from haute couture to traditional crafts. The nearby Quartieri Spagnoli reveals authentic Neapolitan life with its narrow alleys and clotheslines strung between buildings.

Entering Spaccanapoli, literally “Naples Splitter,” you’ll walk the ancient street that divides the city’s historic center. Here, you’ll discover the baroque beauty of San Domenico Maggiore church, and Via San Gregorio Armeno, famous for its artisan workshops creating Nativity scenes year-round. The serene Santa Chiara monastery complex offers a peaceful break with its majolica-tiled cloister.

Moving towards the San Lorenzo area, you’ll reach Naples Cathedral, home to the twice-yearly miracle of San Gennaro’s blood. Beneath your feet lies a layer of ancient Roman ruins, accessible through various archaeological sites.

The tour concludes on Via dei Tribunali, Naples’ “Pizza Street.” Here, historic pizzerias serve authentic Neapolitan pizza alongside traditional pastry shops offering sfogliatella and babà. The street food scene here perfectly captures Naples’ culinary heritage.

The entire walk takes about 4 hours at a leisurely pace, allowing time to soak in the atmosphere and make short stops. Morning hours are best to avoid crowds and enjoy the monuments at their quietest.
